September Newsletter

The Hunger Herald September 2024 Newsletter

Attention! One more month of mouthwatering mayhem in the books and on to the next. We took it kinda easy in July to recharge, and August was so busy it went by in a flash. Rain and heat have really affected the markets and vendors this year. A special thanks to all those who came out in such conditions to continue support for us small businesses. There for a moment though, we got a taste of fall, and all I want is more. Let's hope September Harolds the swift oncoming of cooler weather and weekend sunshine.

September seems to be chalk-full of events, which also means we may be a little shy at our regular markets. Don't worry we will still be close by. Come check out our events for something different to do, and get some of our new stuff. We have a new spice coming out, and hopefully a new vinaigrette.

Last month we saw the debut of "HRBP" Hampton Roads Black Pepper Mustard BBQ, and we sold out in the first week. We are very grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response with this new classic. Opening day was at Spooky Summer, put on by our good friend Carrie at Peanut City Candle Co. Spooky Summer was definitely a great success, with the vibe overshadowing the previous years' somehow. How will we brake the mold next year? Thank you to everyone who came out to shop this exclusive event and support all these women owned business.

We had our first sales event in Richmond this past month at Dorey Park for the Water Lantern Festival. What a great vibe of goodwill throughout the evening.

We also say goodbye to the Bridgeport Suffolk Market, as the 25th was the last official day of the year. What a day that was! We needed a good weekend and our patrons provided. Hopefully Bridgeport'll sneak one more in for us before the Christmas Market December 7th.

New Items

HRBP is available at all markets and for online sale, as supplies last.  A balanced blend of our Bourbon Barrel and VA Mountain BBQs, we loaded it with mustards and black pepper. It is especially delicious.

"YooZoo" Citrus Vinaigrette should see its little head poke out later this month, as soon as all paperwork is approved. Some of y'all may not know, but it can take as along as 2 to 3 months for a new sauce to go from test batch, testing, and state approval.

It's a delightful blend of lemon, orange, lime, and grapefruit, mimicking true Yuzu, the Asian citrus fruit. Hard roasted poblano peppers, shallots, and garlic, give it a wonderful essence of char that pairs well with the hint of sesame. Agave and fresh ginger add to the blend for a floral bright finish, overall creating the right amount of spice without heat. It's been great on all types of salads, noodles, tuna, chicken, crab, you name it.

For all youz fans of "BBQ" Rub & Seasoning, it will be sold under its official new name "Chip 'n Grills" BBQ rub & Seasoning. Same great flavor, new fun name!

Locals only:

Seasonal Spices are always fun! We know some of you dream of past blends, and don't worry, soon enough our whole catalog will be available for at least preorders at the local markets. These rotating blends allow us to experiment and conjure new ideas and get some feedback. But soon we have to be realistic about how much we can bring to market, thanks for working with us!

Currently we have:

Jerk Boyee - Jalapeño Jerk Spice - Perfect balance of heat and flavor!

Imagine being by the beach with a CCJ margarita having jerk chicken thighs.

Conquest Roseus - Pink Peppercorn, Fennel, and Orange Grinder - Scallops BFF

Great on chicken, pork, lamb and vegetables.

Coming September 7th :

"Xurri" our very own chimichurri seasoning experiment upon request. Great for steaks, and all the meats and veggies. All the best things about this classic South American sauce, but in dry form.

2024 Upcoming releases

We described our newest dressing "YooZoo" above, but what else do we got going in the kettle? Well I'm about to tell you.

Al Finalmente! A steak sauce. Many have asked, and we actually experimented with it a couple years back, but a blueberry steak sauce is on the way.

Bloody Worlds End....returns. For those of you who don't know, BWE was a scrumptious riff on table red with all the elements of a Bloody Mary and seafood platters combined. There is no better sauce for seafood, and sadly it has been gone for a few years now. But no more! We will be making a new, more commercial friendly version with same depth of flavor. This fall dreams come true.

An African and Portuguese inspired Peri Peri seasoning will be gracing us this fall as well, filled with beautiful, flavorful, heat.

New Dessert Seasoning Alert

Something pumpkin-y in the works for all y'all...

Maybe something Black Forest too.

IYKYK : Next in line... Pickle Red, La Fantom Royale, Cackalacky Gold

Locally, we have a military, first responder, and teacher perk that you receive a loyalty card with any purchase (disregarding the 3 item minimum to start) and receive an extra stamp per visit. Otherwise if you've only ever bought a single or two items at a time is most likely the reason you are cardless, what a shame. Remember we have over 20 products, one half of which are not spicy

National Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 15th - Oct 15th. We celebrate Hispanic Heritage. Hunger definitely celebrates for two reasons, Dre is of full Colombian heritage, being first generation American, and because South American is the birthplace of chili peppers and tomatoes.

Ají (Ah-HEE) is the South American Hispanic term for chili pepper, and synonymous with the spicy fresh salsa served as a condiment used like relish.

Chili peppers may have originated in the lowlands in Brazil, with evidence of pre-columbian cultivation all over tropical South & Central America.

Similarly, Tomatl was cultivated in what is now Peru and spread through the Americas, its name meaning plump fruit.  Peppers were named after their similar spice to black pepper, from Southern Asian berry bush.

In oberservation, Xurri, Axi Aji, and Colombian Xpress will all be on sale, get all three at the market for $30 starting the 14th!!

September Events

Some cool events this month. The 1st is the second and final day of the Hampton Crabtown festival followed by the Renaissance Harvest Faire in Smithfield. Hunger loves medieval and fantasy themed anything, so this is gonna be awesome.

Latin Fest at Kates Next Door Market is the 14th, kicking off Heritage Month. The end of the month has the anticipated Haunted Screams Convention. We will have an exclusive item "Laitram's Soul" available for that event, so make sure you attend one of the best horror cons in the area and pick one up.

We've come to a close on this illustrious news letter. Please enjoy this coupon for our online store, and if you're stopping by the market, show us this newsletter and we'll honor it there too!
